The old P1 with the mdf platter won't work
One of the greatest challenges of a vertical bearing is keeping the top of the bearing lubricated. Oil like all things, is subjected to the forces of gravity. The oil is pulled down into the bottom of the bearing well, leaving the top of the shaft un-lubricated. To make matters worse, the pull of the belt, cantilevers the shaft forcing it to slightly wear on one side. Rega uses brass as the bearing housing, it is a soft material that will wear if not lubricated.
Deepgroove solves part of the lubrication issue by having our shafts plated with co-deposits of Teflon The sub-micron PTFE is specially blended to produce irregular shaped particles that become firmly imbedded in the matrix. The unique particle blend allows for renewed TEFLON to the surface even as the coating wears. Another unique feature of the plating is it's microscopic dimpled surface which decreases the surface area (decreasing friction) and holds oil particles.
The shaft is made of 303 stainless steel. They are center less ground to 1/10,000 of an inch.
We use an synthetic oil that contains less protons then electrons, creating negatively charged molecules. Their electrostatic attraction allows more molecules to occupy the same space filling the voids created by the plating.
Over the years we experimented with different shapes and cutouts. From a visual standpoint unique shapes and inserts look cool and change the frequency of the vibration, but never eliminate the vibration. But the end result is negligible since vibration travels through solid objects.
The subplatter rides on a synthetic ruby bearing made of corundum which is the second hardest known natural substance. Corundum can be polished to a higher degree then a ball bearing.
The sub platters vertical and horizontal run out measure .002 inches. The measurement was taken at the extreme edge. Run out is an important quality because it will amplifying a warped disc or off center hole.
